Objectives

PERSIMMON’s objectives include developing multimodal sensor patches, improving monitoring accuracy, and ensuring a sustainable lifecycle. By combining novel biomaterials, additive manufacturing, and AI, PERSIMMON aims to set a new standard in smart healthcare solutions while promoting a circular economy.

Develop Biodegradable Smart Patches for Circular Economy

A bodyNET with physical and physiological sensors, reducing motion artefacts, supporting high sampling rates, and using reusable modules. Activity classification accuracy above 90-95%.

Develop AI-Enhanced Body Temperature Monitoring

Expected Impacts

The PERSIMMON Project is set to create a major impact in healthcare and sports by introducing smart, sensor-based patches made from advanced, sustainable materials. These patches will monitor key health metrics like blood pressure, ECG, and motion, supporting decentralized personal health monitoring (DPHM) and self-monitoring for fitness. The patches integrate multimodal sensors and AI-driven data analysis, offering precise, real-time feedback, even in extreme conditions such as high physical activity or temperature changes.

The project could help tens of millions of people, especially in areas like remote patient monitoring (RPM), a market projected to grow from $53.6 billion in 2022 to $175.2 billion by 2027. The European Union alone could see economic benefits of €8 billion and the creation of 80,000 full-time jobs. Furthermore, PERSIMMON’s circular approach to design is set to reduce environmental impact by 90% compared to current smart patches, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient European electronics industry.
